Background of the Study
Patient-centered care (PCC) is a fundamental principle of modern nursing practice, emphasizing the importance of treating patients as individuals and respecting their preferences, values, and needs (Scholl et al., 2023). PCC aims to enhance the overall healthcare experience by focusing on the psychological, emotional, and physical aspects of patient care. In hospitals with limited resources, such as those in Bauchi State, Nigeria, implementing patient-centered approaches may significantly improve recovery outcomes by fostering trust, promoting patient engagement, and encouraging adherence to treatment plans (Salem et al., 2024).
Recovery rates are often influenced by the quality of care a patient receives, and studies have consistently shown that a patient-centered approach can lead to better health outcomes. In Bauchi State Teaching Hospital, a facility catering to a large population with diverse healthcare needs, there is an increasing recognition of the importance of PCC in improving recovery rates, particularly for patients recovering from surgery or managing chronic illnesses (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). Evidence from other healthcare settings suggests that nurses who prioritize communication, respect, and empathy can significantly reduce patient anxiety and improve post-treatment recovery, ultimately leading to faster and more effective healing processes (Ogunleye et al., 2024).
Despite the known benefits of patient-centered nursing, challenges persist in implementing these practices effectively in resource-constrained settings. Nurses in Bauchi State Teaching Hospital face numerous hurdles, including overcrowding, understaffing, and lack of continuous professional development (Musa et al., 2023). The impact of these challenges on the quality of patient-centered care and recovery rates remains poorly understood, and the lack of research on this subject in the Nigerian context calls for urgent investigation.
This study seeks to examine the impact of patient-centered nursing care on recovery rates at Bauchi State Teaching Hospital, focusing on identifying both the benefits and barriers to effective PCC implementation.
Statement of the Problem
While patient-centered care has been widely recognized as an essential element in improving recovery rates, there is limited research on the actual implementation of such care in Nigerian hospitals, particularly in Bauchi State Teaching Hospital. Nurses are often faced with numerous constraints that make it difficult to deliver personalized care that takes into account each patient's unique needs and preferences. These challenges include inadequate staffing levels, high patient-to-nurse ratios, and lack of necessary resources for patient education and support (Akinmoladun et al., 2023). As a result, patients may not fully benefit from the potential advantages of patient-centered nursing, which can delay recovery and negatively impact their overall health outcomes.
Given the growing recognition of the importance of patient-centered nursing in improving health outcomes, it is critical to assess its effectiveness in the context of Bauchi State Teaching Hospital, where healthcare resources are limited and the patient population is diverse. There is a need to determine whether the implementation of PCC can improve recovery rates and identify any barriers that may prevent nurses from providing this type of care effectively.
Objectives of the Study
1. To evaluate the impact of patient-centered nursing on recovery rates at Bauchi State Teaching Hospital.
2. To assess the barriers faced by nurses in providing patient-centered care at the hospital.
3. To propose strategies for improving patient-centered nursing care and recovery rates at Bauchi State Teaching Hospital.
Research Questions
1. How does patient-centered nursing impact recovery rates in Bauchi State Teaching Hospital?
2. What barriers do nurses face in providing patient-centered care at Bauchi State Teaching Hospital?
3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the effectiveness of patient-centered nursing care in improving recovery rates at the hospital?
Research Hypotheses
1. Patient-centered nursing care significantly improves recovery rates at Bauchi State Teaching Hospital.
2. There is a negative correlation between barriers to patient-centered care and recovery rates at Bauchi State Teaching Hospital.
3. Implementing strategies to enhance patient-centered care will significantly improve recovery rates at Bauchi State Teaching Hospital.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the evaluation of patient-centered nursing care in Bauchi State Teaching Hospital, specifically examining its impact on recovery rates among patients in the surgical and post-surgical wards. The study will be limited by the availability of patients willing to participate and the hospital's capacity to provide data on recovery outcomes. Additionally, the study will be constrained by time and resources, which may limit the sample size and depth of data collection.
Definitions of Terms
• Patient-Centered Nursing: A nursing approach that respects and responds to individual patient preferences, needs, and values, ensuring that patients are active participants in their care (Scholl et al., 2023).
• Recovery Rates: The percentage of patients who fully recover from an illness, surgery, or medical treatment within a specified period (Musa et al., 2023).
• Barriers to Care: Factors such as inadequate resources, poor communication, and lack of training that hinder the effective delivery of patient-centered care (Akinmoladun et al., 2023).
